Microplastic Testing

​December 19, 2018

Gautier, Mississippi

For Pi Epsilon's Honors In Action project related to the Health of the Gulf, a microplastic testing was done for Mary Walker Bayou and local water. 

PTK Riley, Meghan, Rebecca, and Jacob acquired samples from various sources and analyzed each with the help of Mississippi State University Extension.

Microplastics are lingering in four different ways: microbeads, microfibers, microfilm, and microfragments. The most commonly found microplastic are microfibers, in which the team found in all samples.

Automotive Safety/Maintenance Seminar

In works to improve students' and instructors' holistic health, the Pi Epsilon introduced an enhanced awareness of real-world issues and how to handle the challenges of “adulting” - helping students adapt to a more self-reliant lifestyle.

The PTK Chapter hosted an Automotive Safety/Maintenance Seminar featuring guest speakers: PTK Will Crider and Health Worker Xuan Phan.

The event provided insight on how to properly check and change a flat tire. Also, it exposed students on the reality of how to properly insert a car seat depending on the child's age and things to keep in mind when driving with passengers.

Health/Physical Wellness Seminar

In works to improve students' and instructors' holistic health, the Pi Epsilon introduced an enhanced awareness of real-world issues and how to handle the challenges of “adulting” - helping students adapt to a more self-reliant lifestyle.

The PTK Chapter hosted a Health/Physical Seminar featuring guest speaker: MGCCC instructor Dr. Sellers.

The event provided insight on ways to eat healthier without breaking the bank, how to be more active during the day with quick exercises, and long-term benefits of being mentally and physically well.

Self Defense Seminar

The PTK Chapter hosted a Self Defense Seminar featuring guest speaker: MGCCC JC Campus Police

The event provided insight on how to defend yourself in the most efficient way when put into a dangerous situation. Seminar also featured tips and methods on what to do post-emergency, such as reaching safety and alerting authorities.

Financial Awareness Seminar

In works to improve students' and instructors' holistic health, the Pi Epsilon introduced an enhanced awareness of real-world issues and how to handle the challenges of “adulting” - helping students adapt to a more self-reliant lifestyle.

 

The PTK Chapter hosted Financial Awareness Seminar featuring guest speaker from Singing River Credit Union.

The event provided insight on how to budget, what is means to have "credit," ways to save oneself from identity theft and financial hardships, and opportunities of how to open bank account.

Water Testing

Gautier, Mississippi

For Pi Epsilon's Honors In Action project related to the Health of the Gulf, a bacterial coliform testing was done for Mary Walker Bayou at two locations: open water and near a drain. 

PTK Officers Jacob, Will, and Christian traveled and discovered the area and navigated PTK Officer Riley and Meghan to take samples days later with the use of a Microbiology lab, Lauryl Trypose broth fermentation, and incubator. 

 

The water testing confirmed that the waters do contain bacteria, such that some areas can be considered "healthier" than other bodies of water. For instance, the water near the drain is more polluted and contaminated as compared to open water.  

Home/Fire Safety Seminar

In works to improve students' and instructors' holistic health, the Pi Epsilon introduced an enhanced awareness of real-world issues and how to handle the challenges of “adulting” - helping students adapt to a more self-reliant lifestyle.

The PTK Chapter hosted a Home and Fire Safety Seminar featuring guest speakers: MGCCC JC Campus Police and the Gautier Fire Department. 

The event provided insight on how to defend yourself in extreme emergencies, such as things to keep in mind, protocols, prevention methods.

 

"Trunk or Treat" and Fall Festival

October 30, 2018

Gautier, Mississippi

The Pi Epsilon advisor, chapter officers, members, and prospective members come together and submit a food booth and "Trunk or Treat" car featuring wild animals, hikers, and a jungle-theme. Overall, we received the the runner-up of best theme/trunk out of the whole venue. 

At our food booth, we raised money for PTK funds by selling irresistible fair food: funnel cakes! Some of our wild animals even helped in the Fall Festival with games and family-friendly fun activities. 

Hurricane Relief Donations

October 26, 2018

Gautier, Mississippi

Pi Epsilon members helped promote, advertise, and gather donations for hurricane victims in Florida. In a matter of just one week (due to time restraints of transportation leaving on short notice), we totaled over 400 supplies. PTK members Holly Baryo, Katelyn Winstead, Nicole Sallis, and Danielle Zwerg collaborated with Ocean Springs Fire Department and added to their stockpile. 

The Hurricane Relief Donation was one of the most successful project of the semester and Thank You to everybody to could help.

PTK Fall Induction

Newly-joined Phi Theta Kappans of the Pi Epsilon Chapter join us for an official Induction as we celebrate their achievements and accept them into the prestigious International Honors Society.   

 

The PTK Fall Induction was sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi. Keynote speaker Dr. Casey Maugh Funderburk, the Vice Provost for the USM Gulf Park Campus, spoke the the inductees and audience on the importance of the little things and how PTK makes a person standout and "be the mermaid in a crowd of elves and goblins."

Mississippi Coastal Cleanup

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

The Phi Theta Kappa Pi Epsilon chapter participated in the annual Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, hosted by Mississippi State University Extension. The event is taken place throughout the whole Gulf Coast with thousands of volunteers who remove millions of pounds of trash from Mississippi’s coastline, waterways, and barrier islands.

The chapter chose to help cleanup up Ocean Springs's Gulf Park Estates Pier. Despite the gloomy weather, everybody came together had a great time beautifying our waters...some may of had too much fun as seen in pictures.

HOMECOMING QUEEN!

Pi Epsilon Officer Kim Lowery is crowned Homecoming Queen for the Jackson County Campus. 

During run-offs and "Meet the Maids," Kim campaigned to various MGCCC campuses and gained votes through her one-of-a-kind charismatic personality! At the Homecoming Brunch, she was officially sashed with her "Homecoming Queen" title!

Ocean Springs Seafood & Music Festival

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

The Pi Epsilon Chapter Team Officers represented MGCCC at the their booth in downtown Ocean Springs at the city's Seafood and Music Festival.

The weekend had numerous food vendors and other organizations in attendance. One of our favorites was an animal adoption group.

Pascagoula River Audubon Center Family Day Celebration

October 13, 2018

Moss Point, Mississippi

Pi Epsilon Chapter members assist with the Pascagoula River Audubon Center Family Day Celebration running stations: face painting, tattoo stamping, pictures, and crafts. The event celebrated the facility's third birthday by revealing the great outdoors, nature, and animals that the area inhabits.

With help of Phi Theta Kappans, the event had hundreds of participants come and enjoy the fun-filled family celebration!

MGCCC Leadership Conference

September 27, 2018

Gulfport, Mississippi

The Phi Theta Kappa Pi Epsilon chapter were invited to attend the annual Leadership Conference, hosted by MGCCC and sponsored by the University of Southern Miss. Filled with leaders and resourceful seminars, the event included fun activities to get to know everybody from various campus: Perk, Jackson County, Jefferson Davis, George County, and others. Those invited were distinguished clubs, organizations, and societies of MGCCC.

The event developed our leadership skills and proceeded to acknowledged that MGCCC is top in the state with its academics and extracurriculars. 

Fall Health Fair

Pi Epsilon members and Leadership Team volunteered at MGCCC JC's Health Fair, greeting attendees and helping exhibitors.

The event was a huge success with people coming through and getting more aware of their physical and mental health, while enjoying goodies.

 

The event was also SUPER HERO-themed with lots of giveaway opportunities. 

MS/LA Awards Conference

September 9 - September 11, 2018

Pearl, Mississippi

The Phi Theta Kappa Pi Epsilon chapter attended the PTK MS/LA Leadership Conference, hosted at Hinds Community College-Rankin Campus. Filled with great speakers and fellowship, the conference included a college fair, educational forum, HIA/College Project Tips, and Running for PTK Office. Our chapter enjoyed participating in PTK activities, such as trivia, ice-cream bar, the photo area, and door prizes!

 

Meghan Nguyen was also officially inducted into her regional position.

Pi Epsilon Scholars

MS/LA Regional Honors Institute

​July 20 - July 22, 2018

Vicksburg, Mississippi

The Pi Epsilon Chapter Team attended the annual MS/LA Regional Honors Institute: "Watersheds, Great Floods, and Lanterns On The Levee: Mississippi's Heritage of Response to Transformation and Change." The weekend was filled with exploration, seminars, and a social to meet other Phi Theta Kappans.

The Chapter Team were given the privilege to experience the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, Old Courthouse Museum, Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum, Vicksburg's National Military Park, Ghost Tour of Vicksburg. In addition, they were spoken to by noteworthy people: Mayor of Vicksburg, panel of HIA fanatics, and "Shape Up" expert.

Team Building on the Ropes Course

Gautier, Mississippi

The new Pi Epsilon Chapter Team for the 2018-19 school year come together to build leadership skills on the Ropes Challenge Course at Jackson County Campus's Estuarine Education Center. They had to trust one another as they communicate on how to reach a common goal efficiently.

In addition on completing the challenge course, the officers encouraged each other to step out of their comfort zone to experience a new beginning: literally supporting each other in all situations and realize that a team requires everybody, not a single player.

Guinness World Book of Records

April 28, 2018

Gautier, Mississippi

Pi Epsilon members helped break the Guinness World Record of the largest pulled-pork serving, sponsored by Wilde's Tavern and others. The total weight of the pulled-pork sandwich was 1086.8 kilograms.

 

Members assisted with breaking apart the meat, transporting it from the grill to the actual sandwich, preparing single servings to local firemen, policemen, and the homeless, and serving it to all the participants who came to the event. At the end of the event on the behalf of the Mississippi State House and City of Ocean Springs, Hank Zuber says "Thank you" to all the volunteers, especially the MGCCC participants.

2018 PTK Catalyst

​April 19 - April 21, 2018

Kansas City, Missouri

The Phi Theta Kappa Pi Epsilon chapter attended the annual Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst, hosted by the International Officers and sponsored by respectable companies. Filled with leaders and resourceful seminars, the event acknowledged Pi Epsilon members and team with special honors. 

 

The Pi Epsilon Chapter received Distinguished Officer Team, Distinguished Honors in Action Project, and Top 100 Chapters. Anastasia Rogers awarded the Coca-Cola Gold Scholar status. Téa Burdine recognized as the Coca-Cola Gold Scholar and Hites Scholar, the highest transfer scholarship PTK offers

MS/LA Awards Conference

March 22, 2018

Hattiesburg, Mississippi

The Phi Theta Kappa Pi Epsilon chapter attended the Spring MS/LA Awards Conference, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi. Filled with great speakers and fellowship, the conference acknowledged Pi Epsilon team with awards and recognition.

 

Mr. John Miller was named a Paragon Advisor. Meghan Nguyen campaigned and won the Southern Representative position on the MS/LA Regional Team. The Officer Team received Outstanding Regional Project Exhibit, Horizon Award, Honors in Action recognition, and Honors Study Topic Theme 6 standout.
